DOT Medical Exam
A DOT Physical Exam determines whether or not a driver is physically able to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle. The physical exam evaluates a driver’s medical history, vision, hearing, blood pressure, respiratory system, & physical attributes. Drivers may be medically cleared for up to two years, with some exceptions that are determined by elements such as blood pressure and glucose levels.
Drug Screening
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has special requirements for drug testing. These requirements impact jobs governed by DOT regulations, like trucking and commercial vehicle drivers. DOT drug tests can be performed for many reasons. They can be performed randomly, when an employer has reasonable suspicion that an employee is intoxicated, as part of a DOT physical exam, after an accident, and as part of a return-to-duty exam—just to name a few.
Preemployment Screening
A pre-employment drug test is vital to determine if a prospective hire uses illicit substances or abuses prescription medication. It may also be used for employees who are returning to work after an injury or absence, at which time it may be referred to as a pre-placement drug test. It is common for employers to require a job candidate to complete a pre-employment drug test, and a job offer may be contingent upon the applicant’s ability to pass.
